Highlights: In November, 2010, OMEED established Kashif Free Wellness Clinic for Women and Children in Dhamial in the city of Rawalpindi. The clinic provides basic health screenings for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, anemia, and malnutrition and other treatable childhood diseases, and breast cancer, all free of charge. The clinic focuses on providing preventative care, immunizations and education on basic principles of health care. Basic medications are provided free of charge and a referral protocol has been established with specialists in the local area.
In addition to the treatment of typical seasonal illnesses, special care is provided for women’s medical problems. Poverty, malnutrition and lack of access to basic healthcare have translated into chronic anemia in women especially of childbearing age. OMEED Free Clinic is dispensing free iron and vitamin pills to these women and checking their hemoglobin on regular intervals. The clinic practices and promotes safe medical standards and sanitary practices that are not always practiced in local clinics. These include single use of needles, frequent hand sanitizing, and daily cleaning of the facility including floor washing and cleaning of chairs in the waiting room.
